Fredonia Parks

Park Locations

Fredonia boasts one of the finest parks and recreation programs in Western New York.  The system consists of seven parks.
Barker Common, located in the center of the business district, is land donated in 1825 by Hezekiah Barker for a public park.  It is beautifully landscaped with trees, shrubs, and flowers, has two intriguing fountains donated in 1901 by Charles L. Mark, many benches, a gazebo, and a drinking fountain donated in 1913 by the Fredonia Women's Christian Temperance Union.  During the summer months, music concerts are featured at the gazebo every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
Houghton Common, located at the top of West Hill, on the south side of West Main Street, was a gift from Judge Jacob Houghton, resident of Canadaway (Fredonia) in the early 1800s.  It is a passive park, landscaped with trees, flowers, and shrubs.  The park boasts a properly inscribed marker, a native boulder from the shores of Lake Erie, that was placed in the park by the Daughters of American Revolution.
Forest Place Park (Washington Sanctuary) extends north along Canadaway Creek to Risley Street.  One may watch the birds that come to rest in the trees lining the creek while sitting on one of the benches provided for that purpose.
Russell Joy Park, which stretches from Howard to Spring Streets, was acquired from various property owners by the Village of Fredonia and Town of Pomfret in 1967-69.  The largest of the parks in the Village, it is named after former Mayor Russell Joy.  This park not only has beautiful nature trails, but also two pavilions for rent to residents and community groups, basketball and tennis courts, a baseball diamond, and playground equipment.
Children also enjoy activities at the Barker Street, Elm Street, Gardner Street, Lambert Avenue, and Russell Joy playgrounds during the summer months.
