History

The Fredonia Waste Water Treatment Plant was built in 1978 and is permitted to treat 3.3 million gallons per day of sewage from the Village, local food processors, SUNY, and neighboring areas.  The plant removes about 97% percent of biological oxygen demand and suspended solids.  It also reduces phosphate levels too less than 0.4 mg/l.

The plant uses a process known as low load activated sludge, developed by the EPA in Dallas, Oregon.  This process was modified in 1995 to a contact stabilzation process with anoxic zones for biological nitrogen removal.
