The Village of Fredonia draws its water from the Fredonia Reservoir. The present storage capacity of the reservoir is 295 million gallons. The watershed area that feeds the reservoir is more than five square miles. A vast majority of the watershed is unpopulated and heavily wooded. From the reservoir, water is piped to the Village's Filtration Plant on Fredonia-Stockton Road, 3 1/2 miles from the downtown Fredonia. It was built in 1925 with an addition in 1937 and another in 1967. A 1,000,000 gallon tank and pump station is located on Webster Road. Competent personnel, using some of the most innovative techiques available, ensure a constant supply of sparkling, clear, and safe water.
There are approximately 56 miles of water mains in the Village which the Village itself maintains. The homeowner has responsibility for the line from the main to the home including any breaks, freezing, etc. that may occur. A list of licensed plumbers is available. All homes and businesses must be metered. These meters are read once every three months and billed accordingly. Rate cards are available at Village Hall.
Recently we have been hard at work to improve how we treat your water. With this goal, we undertook a major capital improvement at the water plant. We replaced all the piping and valves in the filter gallery and added a state of the art SCADA system. This new computer-controlled system allows us to better monitor water quality throughout the treatment process. We also installed new chemical feed equipment, new backwash pumps and motors, and new instrumentation. This will allow us to produce higher quality water through optimization of the treatment process.
In the coming year we plan to improve the water plant buidling. This will consist of adding security features to ensure the safety of our drinking for years to come.
We are proud to report that in 2008 our water was judged to be the best tasting water in Chautauqua County. This acknowledges what we have known for a long time. We take great pride in delivering to our customers some of the best water in the state. Once a year we proudly present our annual water quality report.
