The Village of Fredonia, incorporated in 1829, is one of only 11 chartered Villages in New York State. That means it has been granted the right to establish the laws by which it governs, rather than the proceeding under laws established by the state legislature.

The Village government consists of a five-member Board of Trustees and a Mayor serving four-year terms with elections held in March. The Mayor is the Chief Executor Officer presiding over the Board of Trustees' meetings.

The policies, ordinances, resolutions, rules and by-laws established by the Trustees are carried out by the Village Administrator, appointed by the Board of Trustees serving at their pleasure. The full-time Village Administrator supervises the various departments and agencies of the Village, and other wise coordinates the day-to-day activities and operation of the Village.

The Village Attorney, appointed by the Board of Trustees and serving at their pleasure, is responsible for executing contracts, representing the VIllage in any civil litigation, and providing legal advice and interpretations of the laws and statutes pertaining to the Village operations.
