Description

    The Street Department (DPW) is responsible for a wide range of services in the Village.  Such services include: maintaining water and sewer lines, parks, streets, and sidewalks, including snow removal, leaf pickup, tree trimming or removal, and brush pickup.
    Specifically, the DPW does the following:
    1.  Water Distribution-Installs and maintains water mains and hydrants and inspects water taps.  Service lines from mains to houses are owner's responsibility.
    2.  Sewers-Installs and maintains sanitary sewer and storm sewer lines owned by the Village; inspects sewer taps.  If a problem occurs, call the DPW before calling a plumber.  Service lines from houses to Village mains and other connections from private property are the property owner's responsbility.
    3.  Parks-Maintains Barker Common, Houghton, and Forest Place Parks, and maintains the grounds at Village Hall and Barker Library.  Maintains the grounds, buildings, basketball and tennis courts, and ball fields at Russell Joy Park.  Maintains ground, buildings and playground equipment at all Village playgrounds.
    4.  Streets-Maintains all Village streets except for East and West Main Streets (maintained by New York State Highway Department), and Water, Liberty, Porter, Berry, Matteson, Brigham, and lower Temple Streets from Matteson and Brigham to Village line which are maintained by the Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities.
    5.  Sidewalks-Plows walks during winter as a courtesy to residents.
    6.  Snow Removal-Removes snow, sands and salts all Village streets except for the Streets as listed in number 4 above.
    7.  Leaf Pickup-Picks up leaves beginning in the end of October or the first part of November.  Leaves should be raked into piles between sidewalk and curb, not in the street, but also may be bagged.  Any leaves raked in spring must by put in containers.
    8.  Shade Trees-Trims, removes, and replaces trees between sidewalks, curbs, and the Village rights-of-way, except Main Street.

    9.  Brush Pickup-Village wide pickups of bundled brush and bagged yard waste (grass clippings, small brush trimmings, etc.)occur in the first full week of each month beginning in May and ending in October. Materials must be placed by the curb not later than 7 AM Monday of the first full week of the month. Brush may not be placed by the curb earlier than 7PM of the day before scheduled pickup.

All yard waste must be bagged and all limbs and brush must be tied with twine.  Limbs and brush must be cut no longer than 4 feet in length with bundles being no larger than 18 inches in diameter.  Bundles and bags are limited to 65 pounds in weight.

Village residents may bring bagged yard waste and bundled brush to the designated area at the DPW yard, 176 Eagle St. at any time.

 

Christmas trees are picked up during the first two weeks in January, weather permitting.
